Sylvania 300

The first race in the 2005 Chase for the Cup will be the Sylvania 300 which will take place on September 18 th at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire, a track capable of holding a capacity crowd larger than 100,000 people. The track is a 1.058 mile oval and will also host the New England 300 on July 17 th. Last year’s Sylvania 300 was one of the more memorable races of the NASCAR Nextel Cup season as Kurt Busch dominated the race, much like he had done in the season’s earlier race in Loudon, and took the victory in front of Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to pull him even with Junior in the points chase. Busch led more than half of the race (155 of 300 laps) and the victory could only add to his confidence as he would go on to the hang on to the points championship when all was said and done. Last year’s race, like of the most recent races, had its qualifying session rained out, so points leader Jeff Gordon started on the pole. The lineup for the remaining participants was arranged based on points standings entering the race. Past winners at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon include Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton, and Rusty Wallace.
