The fifth race of ten in the Chase for the Cup will see the NASCAR Nextel Cup contenders travel to Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virginia, for the Subway 500. The track at Martinsville is one of the shortest in the circuit as it measures a mere .526 miles each lap. Some diehard racing fans will insist that the track distance is much too short and that a racetrack like Talladega or Daytona is much better equipped for NASCAR racing but fans will likely have a different opinion because it gives them a chance to see the racers more often and it’s easier to see the other side of the track no matter where your seat might be. Last season, after the green flag waved with seven laps to go, Jimmie Johnson emerged from a group that included Rusty Wallace and Ryan Newman to take the win while Kurt Busch led 120 laps and came one step closer to winning the all-important points championship. Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr, two of the biggest threats to Busch’s title run, were never important factors in the race. This season, Martinsville Speedway will host the Subway 500 on October 23 rd and the Advance Auto Parts 500 on April 10 th. Past winners at Martinsville include Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, and Geoffrey Bodine. Waltrip has won races at Martinsville 11 times in his career to lead all racers.
