Sirius Radio

The Sirius Satellite Radio at the Glen will take place on August 14 th at Watkins Glen International in New York and will give the casual fan of NASCAR racing something they’re not used to seeing. Watkins Glen International is a track of 2.45 miles but it’s not an oval like most race courses, it’s a road course. The track has hosted racing since 1948 and has received acclaim for hosting races like the United States Grand Prix. Last year’s qualifying session for the Sirius at the Glen was rained out so Jimmie Johnson started on the pole for the 90 lap race. Tony Stewart took the lead on the second lap and he and Jeff Gordon continued to battle for the lead. Stewart had an upset stomach that was so bad his team actually contemplated replacing him during the race but Stewart took the lead for good on lap 76 and eventually held on to win the race over Ron Fellows and Mark Martin. Immediately after the race, Stewart left the track area but came out soon after to celebrate the victory with the rest of his team. The victory was Stewart’s second at Watkins Glen International while Gordon was gunning for his fifth road course title. Seven of the last eight champions have been chevy cars and the last time a pole sitter went on to claim the checkered flag was Jeff Gordon back in 1998.
