Dodge Charger 500

Known as the car of the 60s and 70s, the Dodge Charger will make its return to the NASCAR track this season as Darlington Raceway will host the Dodge Charger 500 on May 7, 2005. Last season, Darlington hosted the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 in March and the Mountain Dew Southern 500 in November, both of which were won by Jimmie Johnson, but this season, the Dodge Charger 500 will be the showcase event for the track. The 2005 Dodge Charger 500 will be the first at the Darlington Raceway to take place under the stadium lights and the weekend will also include a Busch Series Race as well as numerous chances for fans to come out and watch the drivers attempt to qualify for the weekend race. 2005 will also be the 49 th consecutive year in which Darlington has been involved in a springtime Cup race. Known as the track “Too tough to tame,” Darlington is a definite fan favorite among diehard fans and casual fans alike as the track is only 1.366 miles around and the action is quick and intense. Jimmie Johnson won both races at Darlington in 2004 and past winners at the track include Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt, and Sterling Marlin. Only 7 winners at Darlington have won from a starting position outside the top 10 in more than 30 races so qualifying will be very important in preparation for the Dodge Charger 500.
