Coca-Cola 600

Last year, Jimmie Johnson earned the pole position at the Coca-Cola 600 with a speed of 187.052 mph and then proceeded to lead nearly wire to wire on his way to winning his second straight Coca-Cola 600. Outside of pit stops, Johnson led most of the way until the drivers reached lap 369 of 400. Johnson came in to pit along with most of the leaders, giving the lead to Jamie McMurray, but Jeremy Mayfield elected to take on two tires instead of four and beat Johnson off pit road. Johnson took the lead back on lap 383 and had to sit through a red flag with 6 laps left before he ended up winning the race under the caution flag. Michael Waltrip finished second and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top three after starting the race back in 37 th position. The 2005 Coca-Cola 600 will take place on May 29 th at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. The track is 1.5 miles around and average speeds usually eclipse the 185 mph mark.
