The Brickyard 400 is one of the biggest races on the NASCAR Nextel Cup schedule year in and year out because it’s held at the Holy Grail of auto racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. The track is a 2.5 mile oval and is called the Brickyard because the track was paved with bricks early in the 20 th century. The facility has 250,000 permanent seats making it the largest sports facility in the nation and a hot spot for races like the Brickyard 400 and the Indianapolis 500. Last August, the NASCAR circuit made its way to the Brickyard with Casey Mears on the pole before Jeff Gordon took the lead for 122 of the 161 laps on his way to taking the checkered flag and closing the gap on the leaders in the points standings. The win was Gordon’s fourth at Indianapolis while Dale Jarrett and Elliott Sadler finished second and third, respectively. In the 11 years that NASCAR has held the Brickyard, only one pole sitter has gone on to win the race (Kevin Harvick, 2003). Gordon won the inaugural race back in 1994 and other notable winners of the Brickyard 400 include Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarrett, and Ricky Rudd. This year, the Brickyard 400 will take place on August 7 th at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway in what will certainly be an entertaining display of racing.
