The fourth of ten races in the Chase for the Cup will see the field move to Kansas City and the Kansas Speedway for the Banquet 400 which will be held on October 9 th. The tri-oval at the Kansas Speedway is a mile and a half around and features some interesting banking features that most tracks don’t offer. The facility is one of the more recent on the NASCAR Nextel Cup circuit because for a while, the Midwestern part of the country didn’t seem to have a keen interest in the development of the sport. After the sport realized they had a reliable fan base in that part of the country, the effort was made to bring more racing to the area. The first race at the Kansas Speedway was held in 2001 and was won by Jeff Gordon. Gordon won the following year as well before Ryan Newman won in 2003. Last year, Joe Nemechek won the Busch Series race and started on the pole in the Banquet 400. Nemechek led most of the 267 laps in the race before he and Ricky Rudd went bumper to bumper on the final lap. Nemechek was able to hold Rudd off by about a car length at the finish line before official results showed Nemechek won by 0.081 seconds, about 1.5 car-lengths. Last year, many of the big names had some trouble at the Kansas Speedway but after another year of experience, fans should expect to see names like Gordon, Busch, Mayfield, and Earnhardt Jr. to show up near the front of the pack.
