Aaron's 499

The 2003 Aaron’s 499 was a familiar tune as Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the lead with three laps to go and held on to win his fourth consecutive race at Talladega Superspeedway. In the 2004 edition of the Aaron’s 499, Earnhardt Jr and Jeff Gordon were battling for the lead with less than six laps to go before Gordon managed to take first away from Junior. Junior continued to battle and looked like he would regain the lead with only four laps left, but a crash between Brian Vickers and Casey Mears sent Vickers into the wall, bringing out the caution flag. Under the old rules of NASCAR, Gordon and Junior would have battled to the line to determine who would be first when they entered the caution but new rules freeze the field when the caution comes out so Gordon kept his lead and went on to win the 2004 Aaron’s 499. At the time, the victory was Gordon’s 65 th of his career and moved him from 7 th and 3 rd in the points race. This year’s Aaron’s 499 will take place on May 1 st at the Talladega Superspeedway, measuring 2.66 miles a lap. The track will also host the Talladega 500 which will be run on October 2 nd and will be the third of ten races in the Chase for the Cup.
